What Fares Ghedjemis' actions could mean for Rangers transfer after latest development
Fares Ghedjemis has made a massive decision on his future at Frosinone after being linked with Rangers in the summer.
The 24-year-old was a concrete target for the Gers in the previous transfer window after his heroics for the Italian club in Serie B last season.
In the previous campaign, the left-footed winger scored 15 goals in 37 league appearances to help win promotion at the PSC Arena.
The Ibrox hierarchy seemed ready to bring Ghedjemis to the Scottish Premiership, with Celtic and AS Monaco also interested.
In the end, the 24-year-old stayed at Frosinone and has played in three Serie A matches so far.
The Algeria international has also committed his future to the Italian club, which may affect the Govan side's prospects of signing him.
Fares Ghedjemis signs new contract after Rangers interest
Reports in the summer suggested that Frosinone wanted £17.1million for Ghedjemis.
At the time, the winger's contract was set to expire in 2028, giving the Serie A side reason to consider his departure.
It wasn't surprising to see the Gers making a move for the Algerian attacker amid their desperate need to bolster Derek McInnes' wide options.
Speaking to L'Equipe in August, Maxime d'Ornano, who coached Ghedjemis at FC Rouen, said, "In some ways, he's reminiscent of [Riyad] Mahrez."
After a long search, the Glaswegian outfit signed Daisuke Yokota, Minsu Kim and Badredine Bouanani to reinforce their attack.
The VfB Stuttgart ace was signed on loan and it remains to be seen whether the Light Blues will trigger their option to buy him at the end of the season.
McInnes may need more depth on the wings if Bouanani leaves, but with Ghedjemis signing a new contract until 2030 at the PSC Arena, it will undoubtedly be harder to pry him away from Frosinone.
What's next for Ibrox transfer business
Ghedjemis shared the announcement on Instagram on 8 October, with the caption "still together", a phrase Frosinone and their fans use for contract extensions.
Now that the Algeria international's arrival at Ibrox looks unlikely, the recruitment team will surely have other targets to monitor.
With the Gers not playing any European competition this season, they can certainly get away with a lack of depth in certain areas of the pitch.
However, in January, signing a new centre-back should be a priority for the Light Blues, with John Souttar not part of McInnes' plans.
If anything were to happen to Emmanuel Fernandez or Olwethu Makhanya, Ben Godfrey would be the only natural option to replace them.
