Ross McCrorie to tick multiple Rangers boxes as Derek McInnes reunion grows closer
Ross McCrorie looks to be on his way to Ibrox as Rangers in what looks a very shrewd signing on the face of it.
McCrorie left the Gers back in 2021, after his loan move with Aberdeen was made permanent due to an obligatory purchase option.
At the time, it was Derek McInnes who brought him to the Dons, and now he will link back up with the Rangers chief.
While McCrorie mainly played as a right wing-back for Bristol City last campaign, he is capable of playing in multiple positions - a trait McInnes will be well aware of.
That quality will add more benefits to the move, and allow the Glasgow side more tactical options next season.
And it will be interesting to see where McInnes opts to play McCrorie.
What is Ross McCrorie's most played position?
Rangers Review have shared that McCrorie is inching closer to returning to the Bears.
McCrorie will likely be joining Rangers to play at right-back, having played most of last season on the wide of defence.
But will that necessarily be the case?
There are multiple other roles that the 28-year-old could ultimately feature in next season as he has changed roles quite frequently over the years.
Interestingly, according to Transfermarkt, McCrorie's two most played roles throughout his career have come as a defensive midfielder (73 games) and as a centre-back (67).
However, as previously stated, he has shifted down the right flank as both a wing-back and full-back.
And he has done the exact same on the left side as well throughout his career as well.
Ultimately, McInnes will have plenty of options, and decisions when it comes to playing McCrorie with the Bristol City man a Swiss army knife for the Gers chief.
Where did McInnes play McCrorie?
With McInnes previously managing McCrorie, we can get a clearer sense as to what position he could possibly be deployed in.
While on the surface he is coming in to feature at right-back, McInnes did prefer to utilise him in the midfield.
At Aberdeen, he played 19 games in defensive midfield under the 54-year-old.
He also featured four times as a right-midfielder, three times at centre-back and three times in central midfield
So, it will certainly be interesting that five years on McInnes gets to work with him again.
After spells away from the middle of the pitch, he could be set for a revival in that role if the Rangers manager seeks to roll back the years.
