Derek McInnes knows he must sign AEK Athens left-back James Penrice at Rangers this summer.

The Scottish manager currently has Tuur Roomens as his only natural senior option at left-back, making reinforcements in that department a no-brainer.

Jayden Meghoma did a decent job for the Gers last season, but the defender returned to Brentford after his loan spell expired.

McInnes could now reunite with Penrice at Ibrox after being unable to work with him at Hearts.

The Scottish full-back joined the Greek club while the 55-year-old head coach was preparing with the Jambos during pre-season.

With the Glaswegian outfit also linked with the 27-year-old during the winter transfer window, it remains to be seen whether they will finally get a deal over the line for him.

What do AEK Athens want for James Penrice sale?

AEK bought Penrice for around £2million from Hearts last summer and he has two years left on his contract.

According to Sportime on 14 July, AEK have set a "significant starting price" to sell the defender.

Ibrox News have covered reports of Rangers' renewed interest in Penrice as they look for cover at left-back.

The Glaswegian outfit know that a deal with the Greek club won't be "easy to do" given they're keen to hold on to Scottish ace.

Why Rangers transfer activity under Derek McInnes baffles

McInnes wants more midfield additions at Rangers despite the recent signings.

Vanja Dragojevic, Lewis Ferguson, Jens Hjerto-Dahl and Ryan Fosso are being linked with a move to the Gers.

Even with Dan Neil and Cammy Devlin's arrival at Ibrox, the Light Blues are looking to reinforce their engine room further.

It's surprising to see so much focus being put on the midfield while other areas of the pitch remain unaddressed.

The Govan side clearly need multiple additions at centre-back and along their entire defence to build a competitive squad for next season.

McInnes can't go into the upcoming campaign with the defensive options at his disposal currently and expect to compete for major silverware.

There should be additions in the backline, but when that will happen is anyone's guess.
