Rangers have been linked with a move for Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes in the summer transfer window.

Despite Lyall Cameron moving to Ibrox, Gers are still understood to be keen on signing more midfielders.

This comes as Nico Raskin is on the radar of Wolves and Aston Villa and an exit has not been ruled out yet.

Flynn Downes bidding likely to start at £9m

Downes moved to Southampton for a £15million fee from West Ham last summer, but he could leave now that they have been relegated.

According to the Daily Record (23 June), it would take something similar for the Saints to consider parting ways with the 26-year-old.

The bidding for the Englishman is expected to begin at £9million, but it could take a money-spinning deal in order to tempt them to sell.

Russell Martin is understood to be a fan of Downes and it remains to be seen if Gers launch an offer for him.

Rangers must make an attempt to sign Downes

Downes would be a valuable signing for Rangers this summer due to his proven track record under Martin, who previously coached him at Swansea and Southampton.

The 26-year-old midfielder’s familiarity with his possession-based system makes him an ideal fit for Gers’ tactical overhaul, as he excels in short passing and adds a physical presence to the midfield.

His experience, with 66 appearances for Southampton and a key role in their 2023/24 promotion, adds leadership and quality to a Rangers squad aiming to challenge Celtic.

Despite a £10million-£15million price tag potentially straining the Ibrox outfit’s budget, Downes’ versatility and ability to control games could replicate the impact of former star John Lundstram, offering stability and creativity in the Scottish Premiership.

His signing aligns with the club’s ambitious plans under new ownership, promising a dynamic midfield presence.
