Rangers are set to sign Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta.

The Gers are wasting no time in the transfer window and have already made strides to improve their squad.

Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie have come in, with the latter taking the number two shirt upon his Ibrox return.

The right-back has come in from Bristol City, but defensive reinforcements are still on the agenda.

That has seen the Light Blues make a move for Godfrey after a difficult spell in his career.

The 28-year-old is edging closer to a Govan switch as a season-long loan will soon be announced.

When will Rangers announce the signing of Ben Godfrey?

There is certainly a need for fresh faces in the backline in G51 after a mixed campaign last time around.

The signing of Emmanuel Fernandez certainly paid off in the end despite some early frustration.

He was regularly joined by Nasser Djiga, but with his loan from Wolves coming to an end, a new option was needed.

That is where Godfrey comes in as Sky Sports News reported on Sunday that Rangers have agreed a loan deal for the defender with Atalanta.

He has undergone a medical with the Gers and is now set to be announced at Ibrox on Monday.

The deal with the Serie A outfit is said to include a "significant" option to buy at the end of his temporary move.

It looks like this one is going to be the third signing of the summer in G51, but the fee at the end could make or break how the deal works out.

Rangers set to sign Ben Godfrey as transfer terms revealed for Derek McInnes

How much could Rangers' buy option be for Godfrey?

The Govan club always have to box clever in the transfer market and can't take too many risks.

That wasn't necessarily the case last summer as Russell Martin and Co. splashed out on Youssef Chermiti among others.

This window has certainly been smart and Godfrey looks set to add to that on a loan deal.

Should he become a key player under Derek McInnes, there will be questions over his buy option.

Given that Atalanta paid around £10million for him in 2024, they will likely want to recoup as much as that as possible.

Even half of that would prove to be a sizable fee for the Gers, although it could prove to be worth every penny if he can re-capture his best form at Ibrox.
