Oscar Cortes will reportedly be leaving Rangers on loan ahead of the transfer deadline on 1 September.

Since Rangers signed Cortes from Lens, he has faced issues in adapting to life in Scotland.

The Colombian has battled form and fitness issues, which have restricted him to only 21 first-team appearances.

While Cortes was part of Rangers' pre-season training under Russell Martin, he is likely to play his football elsewhere this term.

Rangers strike agreement in principle with Sporting Gijon for Oscar Cortes

Cortes has been on Sporting Gijon's radar as the Spanish side want to sign the winger to boost their promotion hopes.

They currently sit in the second place in the second tier of Spanish football, but only on goal difference as they've won all of their opening three games.

The 21-year-old, in his hunt for regular first-team minutes, is now expected to join the La Liga 2 outfit in the next 48 hours.

  • Cortes has three goal contributions in 21 matches for Rangers
  • The winger has represented Colombia at the Under-23s level
  • His contract at Ibrox runs until the summer of 2029

According to La Nueva Espana (30 August), Gers have struck a verbal agreement with Gijon to loan out the Colombian.

He is expected in Spain to undergo his medical before an official announcement is made.

Oscar Cortes has point to prove this season

Maintaining fitness during Cortes' loan spell at Sporting Gijon is essential for the Colombian winger to secure his long-term future at Rangers, where persistent injuries have already stalled his progress.

He joined in January 2024 amid high expectations for his dribbling flair and pace.

However, Cortes' spell in Govan has been plagued by hamstring issues, limiting him to just 12 appearances and one goal last season.

At Gijon, staying injury-free will allow him to get vital minutes to kickstart his stuttering career.

He must focus on disciplined recovery protocols, strength training to bolster his lower body resilience, and tactical adaptation to Gijon's playing style, which will sharpen his end product with assists and goals.
