Oscar Cortes will be leaving Rangers on loan before the end of the transfer window.

Rangers signed Cortes from Lens in the winter transfer window in 2024, but he has faced form and fitness issues during his time in Scotland.

The Colombian winger initially joined on loan but Gers had to eventually shell out £4.5million due to an obligation to buy.

While Cortes arrived for pre-season training for the Ibrox outfit, he is expected to continue his future elsewhere until May 2026.

Oscar Cortes to fly to Spain to complete Sporting Gijon move

Given the 21-year-old's injury issues and his not being a part of Russell Martin's plans, the decision has been made to loan him out.

According to Win Sports journalist Pipe Sierra on 30 August, Cortes is now on the verge of joining Sporting Gijon.

  • Cortes has played 21 games for Rangers, scoring one goal and providing two assists
  • His contract at Ibrox runs until the summer of 2029
  • He has represented Colombia at the Under-23s level

Sierra claims that the Colombian will jet out to Spain this week to finalise his loan move.

It's understood that he will be at the Spanish side until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Rangers can expect a polished Oscar Cortes to return

At Gijon, who are among the favourites fighting for promotion, Cortes can secure consistent minutes in a league that potentially suits his style better than the Scottish Premiership.

Cortes' exposure to the technical aspects of Spanish football can accelerate his development, at the benefit of Rangers, while also taking him out of the hostile atmosphere that plagues Ibrox right now.

When he returns to Govan in 2026, Rangers should expect a more mature, potentially SPFL-ready talent challenging for a starting spot under the manager, justifying his £4.5million fee and bolstering squad depth for title contention.

There will be hope at Ibrox that he manages to stay injury-free in Spain, as well, because that has been a worry for him during his time as a Gers player.
