Rangers could be closer to signing former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley as he reportedly appears likely to end up in the SPFL.

The London club parted ways with the England international as they terminated his contract to make him a free agent.

According to Sun journalist Alan Nixon, the England international was on around a £200k/week deal at Stamford Bridge, has been wanted by the 55-time SPFL champions.

Now, former BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher has taken to Twitter to write, "There is a now a general belief amoung many within the game that Ross Barkley will end up in the SPFL in the coming days."

Barkley could be the big name signing that Rangers have been looking for since they secured qualification to the Champions League group stages.

The fact that he parted ways with Chelsea on Monday afternoon only means that Gers will now only have to pay a signing on bonus - which will be lesser than what they would've paid in transfer fees.

There's a reason why the England international would not want to move to Ibrox as Rangers will be fighting for the league and will also offer him the chance of playing in the Champions League.

Hopefully, there should not be any further snags and Gers can cap off an impressive window despite the big-name exits with the signing of a player who's looking to return to his best.
