Rangers finally have chance to learn from Alfredo Morelos mistake amid Youssef Chermiti transfer latest
Rangers are facing a big decision over the future of Youssef Chermiti this summer.
The Gers agreed a deal that could reportedly reach £10million to bring the Portuguese forward to Ibrox from Everton last September.
Chermiti did not exactly hit the ground running, and he copped plenty of criticism in the early stages of his Ibrox career.
But the 24-year-old's form improved drastically, particularly under now departed boss Danny Rohl.
By the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Chermiti had registered 15 goals in 30 Scottish Premiership outings to win over the Ibrox faithful.
Now, though, Rangers' resolve is set to be tested as the vultures circle for Chermiti's signature.
Youssef Chermiti approach poses Rangers dilemma
Given his form last season, it is little surprise to see that Chermiti is attracting admiring glances from elsewhere.
Most prominent among his suitors are Ligue 1 heavyweights Lyon, who are searching for more firepower after Endrick's loan spell from Real Madrid ended.
According to Foot Mercato, Lyon are pondering launching a formal bid for Chermiti.
Lyon are said to be considering putting together a package that could reach around £15m to sign Chermiti.
That is thought to fall below Rangers' valuation, and there is a determination in Govan to keep Chermiti this season.
But Galatasaray, PSV Eindhoven, and Porto are all said to be also tracking Chermiti, who was the subject of January interest from Fenerbahce.
It might not be what Rangers fans want to hear, but the decision-makers at Ibrox have a past failure they can prove they have learnt from here.
Rangers have to avoid Alfredo Morelos error
Alfredo Morelos was a cult icon at Ibrox, especially when he helped fire Rangers to their last league title under Steven Gerrard in 2020/21.
But the truth is, Rangers missed the boat on cashing in on the volatile Colombian striker when they had the chance.
Morelos' most fruitful season had actually come in the 2018-19 campaign, a season that was also bligted by disciplinary issues.
There were plenty of opportunities for Rangers to make good money on Morelos in that time period, but they opted not to do business.
If Rangers are to be serious about becoming the dominant force in Scotland again, there has to be a realisation that there will be a need to trade.
That's not to say they should roll over and have their bellies tickled if it comes to negotiating a fee for Chermiti.
But, the sum of the parts have to be greater than the whole, and if they can use money from the sale of Chermiti to be in a stronger position overall, they must do it.
Rangers failed in the past when it came to Morelos, who eventually left on a free transfer.
They cannot afford to make the same mistake here with Chermiti.
