Rangers backed to make new move for Lewis Ferguson transfer - here's when

Rangers continue to be linked with a move for Lewis Ferguson.

It is little secret that the Scotland international is a player the Gers would love to bring Ibrox.

Ferguson's father Derek and uncle Barry both represented Rangers, while Gers boss Derek McInnes was his manager at Aberdeen.

Despite links throughout the summer transfer window, Ferguson - who has 28 Scotland caps - remains in Serie A with Bologna.

However, talk of a switch to Rangers refuses to quieten down, and he has spoken of his desire to one day represent the club.

Now, Barry Ferguson thinks that a new attempt for his signature could be forthcoming, but only when one thing happens.

Rangers underwent an extensive summer recruitment drive, signing 14 players in total to bolster McInnes' squad.

Despite the extensive links to Ferguson, Rangers were unable to strike a deal - with some reports suggesting he would have cost £20million.

Instead, Rangers signed the likes of Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin, and Vanja Dragejovic to strengthen the engine room.

Still, though, Barry Ferguson thinks that once his newphew's contract - which runs to June 2028 - winds further down that Rangers might make their move.

Right now he speculated that the fee would have been too much of a barrier to a deal, but he backed Rangers to have another go in the future.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Barry Ferguson said: "That's one of his ambitions at some stage he will play for Rangers.

"Who knows when that will be, I would reckon Bologna will want a chunky transfer fee for him because I think he's still got two years left on his contract.

"Maybe one day, but I would love to see it myself. When that is who knows?

"I would imagine what would have been the stumbling block, would be the transfer fee, but as your contract runs down you know what happens with tranfer fees they go lower.

"You never know, at some stage it might be doable for Rangers if that transfer fee is a bit lower than what I think bologna would want for him at this moment in time."

When presenter Paul Cooney suggested his current fee would be closer to £20million than £10m, Barry Ferguson replied: "Yeah I would think they would be looking at that because of the length of his contract he's got left.

"Never say never hopefully one day in the future we'll see another Ferguson playing for Rangers."

It would be fantastic to see a player of Ferguson's quality make the move to Ibrox.

And the player himself has been extremely honest about wanting to make the move at some stage of his career, while diplomatically not burning bridges with Bologna.

Speaking while on international duty with Scotland this week, Ferguson spoke of his "dream" to play for Rangers.

He said: "I think one day. It’s no secret I grew up a fan. That’s absolutely no secret.

“My family is involved in the club. It was an aspiration of mine, a dream of mine as a kid and that’s not changed.

“But you know, I don’t want to speak about that while I’m still a player at Bologna - I’ve got too much respect for them.

“But yeah, in the future, you never know. It might happen, it might not. But it’s always been something at the back of my mind.”

So, who knows? In the near future, perhaps the latest Ferguson could be about to represent Rangers.
