Kris Boyd questions Rangers transfer policy after £18m Lewis Ferguson reveal

Kris Boyd believes Rangers had the money to sign Lewis Ferguson from Bologna.

The Gers made several additions to their midfield this summer, signing Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin and Vanja Dragojevic for Derek McInnes.

While the Scotland international was also being heavily linked with a move to the Light Blues, he ended up staying in Italy.

There were suggestions that Ferguson could've been available for around £18million, but the Ibrox hierarchy didn't end up signing him.

The 27-year-old faced uncertainty around his future at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, but has played a key role under Domenico Tedesco at the start of the new season.

With the Glaswegian outfit spending over £35m on new signings, Andrew Cavenagh certainly had enough money to make a marquee signing.

What Rangers could've done with Lewis Ferguson transfer

Ferguson seemingly held talks with Rangers during the transfer window, but no bid followed.

Instead, it looks like the Gers focused on a major midfield overhaul with multiple signings in anticipation of Nicolas Raskin's departure.

The Belgium international ended up staying at the Glaswegian outfit and they could've had a double pivot of him and Ferguson.

Instead of letting the likes of Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron and Lyall Cameron leave for the recruits, they could have just gone for the Bologna star as their only midfield addition.

Speaking on The Warm-Up on 9 September, Boyd said, "Ferguson was one that was spoken about. It might have cost a lot of money.

"But at the same time, if you start to count the money that Rangers have spent, would you not have gone to Ferguson and said, right, there's a midfielder we can build the team around.

"I know people have said it was £17m, £18m. It's a lot of money, but Rangers have spent a lot of money."

Where Lewis Ferguson transfer to Ibrox may now stand

While it looked like Ferguson may have been open to the idea of joining Rangers, there's no guarantee he will feel the same in the future.

The Gers could potentially have missed out on an influential transfer by not signing the midfielder.

Speaking in 2025, Joe Jordan said, "He's a complete midfielder. Effective in both attacking and defensive movements and with a strong finishing ability and I am not surprised he has been compared to [Scott] McTominay."

The lack of leadership in the Light Blues' young squad is evident, and the large turnover of players in Govan doesn't necessarily bode well.

Now that it looks like Tedesco values Ferguson, he can reignite his career in Italy and possibly get a bigger move next summer.
