Keith Hackett examines Rangers controversy after penalty claims vs Falkirk
At around the half-hour mark at Falkirk Stadium on 2 September, the ball appeared to hit the South African international's hands twice inside the Gers' box.
First, when going for a header after a set-piece delivery, the ball seemed to strike the 22-year-old centre-back's hand and then, immediately after, a shot from close distance looked to have hit his arm.
At that point, the Ibrox side were 1-0 up and eventually beat Falkirk 2-1 in Westfield.
The home supporters in Falkirk Stadium were adamant their team should've had a penalty in that moment.
Lawrence Shankland's goals on either side of the break ensured Derek McInnes' team got the three points away from home and it was a well-deserved victory for the Glaswegian outfit.
Should Falkirk have had penalty vs Rangers?
During commentary, Chris Sutton said it would've been harsh had Makhanya been penalised against Falkirk.
Keith Hackett praised Steven McLean and the VAR team for handling the situation correctly.
The on-field referee immediately dismissed any calls of a penalty despite a large section of the home support making their feelings known.
VAR must have surely looked at the incident and didn't feel it was worthy of an on-field review.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Hackett said, "The law on handball states it's an offence if a player: deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example, moving the hand/arm towards the ball, touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger.
"When you examine this incident, the referee and VAR have made the correct judgement in that while the ball does strike the hand/arm of the player, it's clearly not a deliberate action.
"The short distance between the player who last played the ball doesn't allow the player to withdraw his hand/arm to avoid striking it. Correct decision by the officials."
What Derek McInnes can learn from win vs Falkirk
While Rangers have shown some encouraging signs in recent matches, there's still a lot of work that McInnes needs to do.
As soon as one of the Gers players makes one mistake, the whole team seems to lose their concentration.
The Light Blues have kept just two clean sheets in their opening nine games of the season.
Emmanuel Fernandez hasn't been at his best under McInnes and the Scottish manager needs to do something about it.
The Glaswegian outfit's attack is slowly starting to click, but it remains to be seen how the new arrivals will affect that dynamic.
