How Rangers will feel about Jayden Meghoma transfer call after 'brilliant' John Mousinho shout

Jayden Meghoma firmly split opinion during his time at Rangers last season.

The 20-year-old left-back moved to Ibrox on a season-long loan deal from Brentford.

He played 44 times in all competitions for Gers, scoring once and providing six assists.

Despite starting 25 times in the Scottish Premiership last term, his role began to dwindle under Danny Rohl in the second half of the season.

This coincided with the arrival of Tuur Rommens in the winter window, and helped ensure his time in Govan would end with a relative whimper.

Now in pastures new south of the border, the attacking-minded defender won't exactly be sending word of his exploits back to Glasgow.

What has Portsmouth boss John Mousinho said about Jayden Meghoma?

Ibrox News covered reports that Rangers were deciding between signing Meghoma and James Penrice in the final hours of the summer window.

Of course, Gers opted to sign the latter, who has really taken to life in Derek McInnes' squad and is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Meghoma still got his summer move, however, as he put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal with English Championship outfit Portsmouth.

Pompey boss John Mousinho, as quoted via BBC reporter Andrew Moon on X, waxed lyrical about Meghoma after a 2-0 win over Cardiff earlier this month.

“In the first half you could see how athletic he is, how composed he is on the ball, what he gives us going forward as well," he said.

"The second half as well, brilliant cross for that third goal that was unfortunately disallowed.”

But as shown via FotMob, Meghoma's underlying numbers tell a very different story on his start to life at Fratton Park this term.

How Meghoma is faring against Championship rivals this season

In the three Championship games he's been eligible to play in since joining Portsmouth, Meghoma has started all of them.

However, he ranks in the bottom 5.7 per cent of all Championship left-backs for his 2.36 duels won and 2.36 recoveries per 90 minutes in 2026-27 so far.

On top of that, he also places in the bottom 10.3 per cent for his 3.93 defensive contributions and the lowest 24.1 per cent for his 0.39 chances created per 90.

Meghoma's 27.1 successful passes, 14.3 per cent cross success rate, 0.39 touches in the opposition box and 1.57 clearances are all amongst the lowest in his position too.

Clearly then, and despite what Mousinho may say, Rangers won't be losing any sleep over their reported decision to snub Meghoma in favour of Penrice.

The AEK Athens loanee has already grabbed a goal and an assist this season, and is operating on consistently top level at Ibrox.
