How Rangers' summer spending compares 12 months on as eighth deal imminent

Rangers are on the verge of announcing the signing of Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya.

Makhanya will become the Gers' eighth arrival of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has made just 77 career appearances to date, including one at senior level for South Africa.

However, Rangers have seen enough in Makhanya to push through a deal for the centre-back.

More signings will follow, but Rangers' squad now appears to be locked in for the opening game of the campaign at Dundee United on Friday.

Rangers on a par with 2025-26 spending

Sky Sports reported via their live blog on Wednesday evening that confirmation of Makhanya's arrival is "close".

He will cost Rangers around £3m, taking the summer spending so far to just short of £15m.

That includes £6m being spent on Ivor Pandur, who is the big signing of the summer so far in terms of monetary value.

Rewind 12 months ago, and Rangers had spent around £14m - so near enough the same.

It was in August that Rangers really started to splash the cash last summer, with £8m Youssef Chermiti the marquee signing.

Why a lot more money could yet be spent

Rangers' summer window so far can be described as 'steady' more than anything.

There has been nothing to blow supporters away, but some smart acquisitions have been made.

As covered by Ibrox News, Oliver Antman's exit will bring in a fee north of £4m.

Jack Butland also raised £3m when joining Hull City, while bigger is yet to come when Nicolas Raskin finally departs - potentially bringing in as much as £20m.

It means Rangers surely still have one or two more big-money deals left in them.

Vaclav Cerny could well be one, with that a potentially huge deal if it can be pulled off.

The new season may begin in a day's time, but that does not mean the spending is anywhere near finished yet.
