Ferguson warns West Ham United off signing player at Rangers

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson does not believe Rangers loanee Vaclav Cerny is cut out to be a success in the Premier League amid links to West Ham United.

Reports from Spain suggest Cerny has attracted interested from West Ham, as well as LaLiga side Villarreal, after starring on loan at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement has already indicated Rangers are unlikely to be able to afford a deal for the Wolfsburg player permanently at the end of the season.

But while Cerny boasts a respectable nine goals and two assists in the Scottish Premiership this term, pundit Ferguson admits the English top flight is a different proposition.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: "If I'm being totally honest, I think he's be found out a little bit. He's fortunate in that in this Rangers side, they dominate the ball for most part.

"In England, that won't be the case. He's a guy who drifts in and out of games. He can be terrific on his day, but I'm not sure he'd give the consistency teams would need.

"Without being too cruel, he's a nice player on the ball and his record is pretty good up here, but to move up a standard in the Premier League - or Serie A, Ligue 1, LaLiga - I'm not sure he'd have that same impact.

"Would he be a massive loss to Rangers? I'm not so sure. To tell the truth, he'd find it tough down in England."

Vaclav Cerny record for Rangers

Cerny has 16 direct goal involvements for the Gers in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League combined - a more-than-decent return.

Rangers fans would love to see him join permanently, even if he does go missing in games, but the truth is his asking price will be too high.

Instead, a return to Wolfsburg is the most likely outcome and it may well be that another club - potentially West Ham - take a punt on him.

Ultimately, Cerny has earned his chance to make the step up, and the only way to find out if he can make it in the Premier League is if a club like West Ham makes an offer.
