Everything we know about new Rangers target Olwethu Makhanya: From early life in Africa to footballing idol
Rangers have a new target in Philadelphia Union's Olwethu Makhanya.
The Gers are keen to add a centre-back to their ranks this summer, and the South African international has been added to the list.
Derek McInnes' squad are currently out in Spain on pre-season duties, as preparations step up for the new season.
The Bears have already beaten Dunfermline and Raith Rovers, while recently picking up a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs, but it's all been good fitness tests for the players so far.
However, work is continuing back in Govan to ensure the new Gers boss has some fresh players to meet up with when he returns to Auchenhowie.
Makhanya is the latest name to be added to Rangers' wishlist of defenders, and Ibrox News takes a look at everything there is to know about the 22-year-old.
What we know about Olwethu Makhanya as Rangers 'considering' move
Ibrox News has previously reported Rangers' interest in signing a new centre-back, as they failed in their attempts to land Luke Graham.
It comes after Nasser Djiga and Derek Cornelius returned to their respective parent clubs following their loan deals at Ibrox.
John Souttar is also on McInnes' list of players who are set to be shown the door, as replacements are needed.
According to Sky Sports Scotland on Tuesday, Rangers are "considering" a move to sign Makhanya from MLS side Philadelphia Union.
As highlighted by the Conway Bulletin, the 22-year-old was born in Durban, South Africa and grew up in the country which is strong on domestic football culture.
His progression into the beautiful game began in his late teenage years, joining Stellenbosch before making the move to senior football in 2022.
Makhanya stands at just over 6,0", and made a rapid transition from football in South Africa to MLS football, and is now regarded as a top talent in America.
He reportedly idolises former Manchester City star and England international, John Stones, which may show he's kept an eye of British football.
Now, Rangers could be getting one of the best young defenders in the MLS, if they make a move.
Makhanya's stats show he'd cut it in Scotland
While Makhanya is unknown to some, the MLS is a league that is gathering more attention.
A division that is regarded as an untapped market to many footballing directors, the MLS has produced some top talent that have made their way to Britain in recent years - and Makhanya could be next.
The centre-half has played 13 times in the MLS this year, and wins 66.7 per cent of his duels in the air, a trait which is appreciated in a rough division like the Scottish Premiership.
He also boasts ability on the ball with an 83.3 per cent dribble success, as well as a 79.6 per cent passing accuracy.
Makhanya is a physical unit and looks like someone who would fit in well with Rangers in Scotland.
