Rangers have learnt how much it will take to sign Lewis Ferguson.

The Bologna midfielder has constantly been linked with the Ibrox side, given his family connections to Govan.

His father, Derek Ferguson played 76 times for the club, while uncle Barry Ferguson featured 424 times as is regarded one of their greatest players.

Rangers previously passed up the chance to sign him before he made the move to Italy in 2022.

The Light Blues must regret that now, as he would be the star man in their side.

Derek McInnes' side now know the conditions for a deal, so the ball is in their court.

Rangers set to enter Lewis Ferguson chase as price tag emerges

The Gers seem to have reignited their interest in the 26-year-old, who started all three of Scotland's World Cup matches.

They face competition from Roma, Lazio and Atalanta, as well as Premier League sides from south of the border, according to il Resto del Carlino.

The Scotsman journalist Barry Anderson claims that Bologna have placed a £17.2m asking price on the midfielder.

It may be a hard sell, given the level of interest, and his previous comments on the Gers provide mixed evidence of how he feels about a switch to the G51 side.

What has Ferguson said about Rangers?

Ferguson has previously spoke about the decision to release him from the Auchenhowie outfit.

He revealed that he feels that it was the right decision, saying: “Looking back now, it was probably the best thing that happened to me.”

He was not open to discussing a move when asked about the Gers' interest while he was at Aberdeen, insisting that he was focused on the Dons.

He said: "I'm just concentrating on Aberdeen. I don't really look into all the speculation."

However, he has admitted that he sees the legendary uncle as the benchmark, due to his exploits with the Bears.

He said: “He obviously captained Rangers – he’s a legend there – and captained his country so it was always a point of reference, someone I looked up to and thought, you know, I want to try and emulate that.”

That provides encouragement that the Gers could offer him a similar pathway, but supporters cannot get their hopes up.

The 55-time champions may have missed the boat when it comes to signing the 27-cap international, it may be too late, as he may be destined for greater things.

Only time will tell, whether they can convince him that his future is on the blue half of Glasgow and to follow in his uncle's footsteps and forge a heroic career there.
