Derek McInnes can't fall into Rangers trap as Cammy Devlin talks mooted
Derek McInnes must resist falling into a familiar habit in the transfer market when he takes over at Rangers.
The Gers have acted quickly to agree a deal for the 54-year-old Hearts manager as Danny Rohl looks set to join Red Bull Salzburg.
The former Light Blues player will likely already be drawing up a list of transfer targets, to try and take the Bears above his old team and Celtic.
Cammy Devlin has been mooted with a move to Ibrox, as he soon becomes a free agent, but the new potential manager can't rely on too many players from his former side.
That would be a transfer trap that would hamper his tenure in the dugout from the very start.
He simply can't let it happen, as it will not work out well for either party.
Why can't Derek McInnes bring in too many Hearts players at Rangers?
Rangers have already brought Lawrence Shankland in, before the possibility of McInnes joining was apparent.
Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson believes that the manager may have already held talks with Devlin over joining him and Shankland in Govan.
He wrote: “I’d be astonished if he’s not on his radar. In fact, I’d be astonished if there hasn’t been been some sort of talks between the pair already.”
They should be looking elsewhere for other players, though, as the Jambos could not beat Martin O'Neill's side to the title last season.
Therefore, there is no suggestion that they could do so in a different shirt in the next campaign.
One or two more would not hurt, perhaps, but the former Kilmarnock man can't bring in lots of his Tynecastle side because it will set the Auchenhowie side up for more disappointment.
What should the Gers' transfer strategy be?
The Gers do need a backbone of Scottish players, who know the expectations of playing for the Glasgow giants.
Shankland is a perfect example of that, Devlin also has significant experience, so they are solid moves.
However, other players such as Claudio Braga, Ageu and Jordi Altena had their first season in the league.
If McInnes considers any of his former players to be truly exceptional and believes that they have what it takes to play for the Bears, then that is fine, but he can't bring that many.
The G51 side need a mixture of foreign exports and Scottish talent, if they are to challenge for the title again.
