Cammy Devlin Rangers move puts bold Derek McInnes Hearts claim under fresh spotlight
Rangers have officially announced the signing of Cammy Devlin.
Leaving Hearts following the expiration of his contract, the 28-year-old reunites with Derek McInnes at Ibrox.
Following in the footsteps of McInnes and striker Lawrence Shankland, the Australian becomes the third to make the exact same switch in a matter of months.
The trio came ever so close to winning the title with Hearts last term, before being beaten by Celtic on the final day.
Both Shankland and Devlin proved crucial to this, with McInnes singing their praise throughout the campaign.
And now, with the pair now calling themselves Rangers players, the former Hearts boss can have no excuses for the coming term, with a previous claim now under the spotlight.
What has Derek McInnes previously said about Cammy Devlin and Lawrence Shankland?
Throughout the 2025-26 season, Hearts sat firm at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
They would for large periods of the impressive season, with the final day loss to Celtic taking nothing away from what was an incredible run at Tynecastle.
The new Rangers duo proved pivotal in this, with boss McInnes lauding the pair.
"Cammy [Devlin] brings so much," he said at a press conference in March.
"I think Lawrence [Shankland] for me, until he went out of the team with injury, he was the best striker in the league. Cammy, for me, was arguably the best midfielder in the league."
These shouts are hardly surprising either, with Shankland registering 20 goals and six assists across 34 appearances in all competitions, while Devlin bossed the midfield 33 times for the Jambos - scoring a big goal against Falkirk in May.
Ahead of the coming season, McInnes can have no excuses as the backing continues, and Gers fans might be able to begin fully feeling the excitement under the new boss.
McInnes can have no complaints at Rangers backing - what are the expectations?
Of course, Rangers are always expected to fight for the title at a very least, with only a few specific scenarios resulting in a lack of success being excusable.
The coming season most certainly doesn't fit into that category.
The Gers have recruited well so far, and they have added two players in which McInnes deems to be the best in the league.
At Hearts, he took them within moments of winning the title, at a club with a fraction of the resources.
At Ibrox, adding two of the division's best to a side already carrying title ambitions will only result in one thing - the instant need for success.
The new boss knows the club and knows the standards, and he will know more than anyone just what is anticipated of him after the transfer business so far.
