Bryan Reynolds exactly what Rangers need as shortcomings clear for all to see
Bryan Reynolds is being lined up as James Tavernier's successor at Rangers.
The 34-year-old has officially left Ibrox upon his contract expiring later this month after 11 years with the club.
He could not agree on fresh terms with the Govan side, and ultimately fell out with Danny Rohl, leading to chaotic scenes in the final home game.
The Gers need a new right-back to replace the hole that Tavernier has left in the squad.
They may actually secure an upgrade amid their interest in the Westerlo defender.
Reynolds may well make up for the shortcomings of the Englishman, that were masked by his attacking contributions, and were clear for all to see.
How do Bryan Reynolds and James Tavernier compare?
Reynolds featured 39 times in the Belgian Pro League, while Tavernier only made 34 league appearances in Scotland.
The out-of-contract Gers man comes out on top for goals scored with eight to the American's two, per Sofascore.
He also edges the assist tally, with four to the 24-year-old's three, and it is not close when it comes to chances created.
Tavernier put 19 chances on a plate for his teammates, while Reynolds managed just five.
Defensively, though, the Westerlo man beats the departing Light Blues skipper on multiple metrics.
He averaged 0.8 interceptions to the Ibrox ace's 0.6, 2.9 clearances to Tavernier's 2.6, and was dribbled past 0.5 times to the Gers' star's 0.6.
The pair are close when it comes to ground duels, with 50.4 and 50.8 per cent success rates, but the potential additions is much better in the air.
The 24-year-old won 67.8 per cent of his aerial battles, compared to just 52.7 per cent for Tavernier.
Why Reynolds may make up for Tavernier's shortcomings
Reynolds looks like a contender to take up the mantle from the former Middlesbrough man.
He is better defensively, but not as potent going forward, but that may be exactly what Rohl needs to make his side into genuine title contenders.
The attacking nature of his captain may have contributed to the Light Blues' downfall this time around, and with a more defensive minded man in the position, they should be more solid at the back.
Only time will tell, but it looks like a shrewd move from the G51 side.
