Ben Godfrey has joined Rangers on loan from Atalanta as another part of the jigsaw was added for Derek McInnes' squad.

The versatile defender, who can play at centre-back or right-back, will spend the 2026/27 campaign at Ibrox.

Rangers' recruitment team have been busy in the market, ensuring the tools are in place for McInnes to have an assault at the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Lawrence Shankland, like McInnes, made the move from Hearts, who were desperately close to winning the title last term.

Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur has arrived in a £6million deal from Hull City, while Ross McCrorie reunites with McInnes, who was his manager at Aberdeen.

But there is one detail that Rangers supporters will particularly enjoy about Godfrey's decision to make the move to Scotland.

Ben Godfrey decision will delight Rangers fans

There was concern among supporters about the decision to make another loan signing as part of the recruitment drive.

There has been feeling that Rangers have been overly reliant on temporary moves to flesh out their squad in recent seasons.

However, Chris Jack reported for the Rangers Review that the recruitment team managed to negotiate the deal without paying a loan fee.

Moreover, they have a purchase option of £3.8million to make the move permanent if Godfrey impresses at Ibrox.

However, Jack also revealed that Godfrey himself has made a "financial sacrifice" to make the move to Ibrox happen, after an unhappy spell in Italy.

Godfrey has a point to prove but financial decision is a good start

Godrey was once a prodigious talent, who impressed as a youngster at Norwich City and made the move to Everton back in 2020.

After falling out of favour on the blue half of Merseyside, Godfrey joined Atalanta in an £11million deal in 2024, but never really got a look in.

Unsuccessful loan spells at Ipswich Town and Sheffield United have followed, so sceptics might be questioning the rationale for bringing him to Ibrox.

But it will not be lost on Godfrey how important this loan is. He is 28 now and approaching the peak years of his career.

Rangers fans will love to hear that he has made a financial sacrifice to make this move happen, it is a clear indication that he is taking his move seriously.

But it is still only a start and, while taking a financial hit is a good sign of his commitment, he must perform on the pitch for Rangers.
