Ben Godfrey could be out for weeks already as Rangers hunt another two new signings

Ben Godfrey's start to life as a Rangers player isn't going to plan.

The 28-year-old arrived at Ibrox on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta, as he attempts to get his stagnating career back on track.

Once a Premier League regular for Everton, the centre-back - who has been capped twice for England at senior international level - has endured a torrid few years recently.

Injury problems mixed in with underwhelming and inconsistent performances has seen his first-team action significantly limited wherever he's been since joining Atalanta in 2024.

Indeed, in the three loan spells he's had prior to signing for Rangers, Godfrey made five appearances for Ipswich, four for Sheffield United and 12 in his most recent stint with Brondby.

And, any hope of hitting the ground running with Rangers may now have just gone out of the window too.

Ibrox News discussed Godfrey's alarming pre-season footage against Kaizer Chiefs, in which he was blown past in the build-up to Chiefs' goal in that 1-1 draw last month.

The online reaction from many Rangers fans reacting to this was one of concern and scepticism over his signature.

However, some of those fears were on the way to being alleviated in Friday night's Scottish Premiership opener against Dundee United, in which he was handed his competitive Rangers debut at Tannadice.

Unfortunately though, Godfrey was forced off just after the hour mark, and according to the Sunday Mail, he's now set to undergo a scan to uncover the seriousness of his injury.

The newspaper reports in its print edition that the best-case scenario would be that Godfrey only needs to miss two to three weeks, but the likelihood could be that it's going to be more than that.

This fresh injury concern could now force Rangers back into the transfer market at the position, with it claimed that Derek McInnes is still hunting two new defenders this summer after the arrival of Olwethu Makhanya.

That's understandable too, given that he's endured a number of disappointing loan spells now on top of this fresh injury issue.

However, as detailed via FotMob, he was actually putting in a really encouraging performance against Dundee United in the 63 minutes that he was on the pitch.

He made seven clearances, six of those being headed, made one last man tackle and committed zero fouls.

Godfrey also won two of his three ground and aerial duels, won one foul, was dispossessed zero times and played three passes into the final third.

So, an extended absence for Godfrey would be a big blow to Rangers, and would pile further unwanted transfer pressure on Ibrox chiefs to ensure McInnes isn't left short in the heart of defence.
