Barry Ferguson saves highest praise for James Penrice after standout Rangers admission
Barry Ferguson loves James Penrice at Rangers.
The Gers icon would've liked to see the left-back at Ibrox sooner, but it's better late than never.
In the summer, the Light Blues signed the Scottish defender on loan from AEK Athens, with the deal including an option to buy.
Penrice has slotted in perfectly into Derek McInnes plans at Ibrox.
Against Celtic, the 27-year-old's role as an inverted full-back caught the eyes of fans and prominent pundits alike.
The ex-Hearts ace has been brilliant for the Govan side at both ends of the pitch, with Ferguson saving the highest praise for him.
What Barry Ferguson and Charlie Mulgrew have said about James Penrice at Rangers
Penrice was influential against Kilmarnock, providing the assist for the first goal in the Gers' 3-1 victory.
The Scottish defender played a brilliant cross into the box, putting it on a plate for Ryan Naderi.
Ferguson acknowledges that the Light Blues made some astute additions in the previous transfer window, but Penrice is the best of the lot.
Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew also seems to be blown away by the left-back after what he did at Ibrox recently.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 12 October, Ferguson said, "I think the Rangers fans, and Michael is agreeing here, he has been a top signing for me.
"I know everyone is talking about Makhanya at the back, and rightly so. Dan Neil. Kelsy has done well. Kim has been a brilliant find as well. But Penrice, for me, has been the standout."
Mulgrew added, "His ball at the weekend was top class."
It's time for Derek McInnes to address elephant in the room at Ibrox
Rangers are flying high at the moment, with several summer signings living up to expectations.
However, the Gers made 14 new additions to their squad and not all have worked out.
The likes of Kosta Nedeljkovic, Ben Godfrey, Vanja Dragojevic, Daisuke Yokota, Badredine Bouanani and even Ross McCrorie haven't had consistent opportunities at Ibrox.
There's still time for them to turn things around, but one player the Glaswegian outfit's fans have already made up their mind on is Cammy Devlin.
The Australia international was likely McInnes' personal signing after starring under the Scottish manager at Hearts last season.
While the Govan side signed Devlin on a free transfer, it still raises questions about the recruitment department's ability to identify the right talent.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 28-year-old under McInnes, but his prospects don't seem encouraging as he recovers from an injury.
