Barry Ferguson refuses to comment on Lewis Ferguson to Rangers - but latest update is telling
Lewis Ferguson to Rangers is a transfer rumour that refuses to go away, even if Barry Ferguson is unwilling to discuss it.
Barry is the uncle of former Rangers player Lewis, who never made the grade at Ibrox prior to leaving in 2013.
Ferguson instead progressed through the ranks at Hamilton Academical, before joining Aberdeen and then moving on to Bologna.
It is in Italy that the midfielder's game has gone to a whole new level, but a return to Scotland may now be on.
Ferguson is said to be tempted by a Bologna exit amid the interest from Rangers.
And fresh reports from Italy on Friday only further indicate he may be allowed to depart.
Lewis Ferguson contract update emerges from Italy
Ferguson has two years left to run on his contract with Bologna, whom he won the Coppa Italia with last year.
That gave the 26-year-old instant hero status as it ended the club's long wait for silverware.
He has since gained experience in European football, while also impressing for Scotland at the World Cup - even if that experience was short-lived.
Now, Tuttomercato report that while Bologna are more than happy with Ferguson, they are not currently discussing a new contract.
Given he still has two years to run on his existing terms, that is not exactly strange.
However, given he has been so strongly linked with Rangers, it could also suggest Bologna are enticing the Gers into making a bid.
It may well take a record bid to prise Ferguson away from Bologna, but the door is certainly open if Rangers intend to make a move.
What has Barry Ferguson said on Lewis Ferguson talk?
Not a lot, is the answer. Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday, former Gers skipper and caretaker boss Ferguson said he would rather steer clear of the topic.
"I'm aware that lots of people have been talking this week about my nephew Lewis potentially moving to Rangers," he wrote.
"I also understand that people want to ask me about it, but I won’t be joining the discussion.
"Why? Because it’s not my business. I know the story has been everywhere, but I’m staying out of it.
There is also the small matter of Ferguson's father, Derek, being a former Rangers player and a Gers fanatic.
This all works in the Light Blues' favour, of course, but only one thing truly counts.
And that is that Rangers cough up what Bologna are asking for if they do indeed plan a homecoming.
