Barry Ferguson names next Rangers transfer priority in 'absolutely massive' Derek McInnes admission

Rangers are still on the hunt for reinforcement after a dismal start to the tenure of Derek McInnes.

The Gers have been on an extensive recruitment drive, which has seen nine players arrive already during the window.

However, Rangers have made an appalling start to the 2026/27 campaign under new manager McInnes.

They have drawn with Dundee United and lost to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, while they were beaten over two legs by Jagiellonia Białystok in Europa League qualifying.

It means the pressure is already mounting on McInnes just four games into his competitive tenure as the Bears boss.

More players are expected to arrive with Rangers' recruitment coming under scrutiny, and Barry Ferguson has shared where his next target would be.

McInnes' next priority at Rangers is thought to be more flair and creativity out wide, with Daisuke Yokota the only wide player signed among the influx of new arrivals.

A deal looked set to be completed for PSV attacker Couhaib Driouech, but Rangers pulled out at the 11th hour amid concerns on when he would be fit to play.

However, former Rangers captain and interim manager Ferguson thinks McInnes' side is still lacking bite in midfield.

Cammy Devlin, Dan Neil, and Vanja Dragojevic have all been signed this summer to add options in the centre of the park.

But, speaking on the Go Radio show, Ferguson expressed his belief that they need another body in central midfield.

He said: "I'm looking at the team, I still think we need a really dominant central midfielder.

"Somebody who can grab the game by the scruff of the neck, calm it down when it needs calming down, get it going when it needs to get going.

"So, look I think the next two-and-a-half weeks left of the window, I think it's going to be absolutely massive for Derek."

Central midfield is already an area where Rangers are overstocked, especially with a trio of new signings to play in the centre of the park.

There are, though, doubts over the long-term futures of Nico Raskin and Connor Barron before the transfer window slams shut next month.

It would especially be a surprise to see Raskin still at Ibrox before the end of the windo after the impressive World Cup he enjoyed with Belgium.

Right now, you sense there are more pressing concerns, especially in the final third where Rangers just look completely devoid of ideas.

There is also work to do in the full-back areas, especially with Tuur Rommens sidelined by injury at left-back.

In essence, it feels like a nice-to-have, but perhaps there are issues elsewhere on the pitch that should be addressed first.
