Technical Profile
Raskin acts as the primary link between the defensive line and the attack. His ability to receive the ball under pressure and turn into space is vital for Rangers’ progression through the phases.
Defensive Work Rate
A tenacious tackler, Raskin excels in the counter-press. His recovery pace allows the full-backs to push high, knowing he can cover the width of the pitch to break up transitions.
Tactical Role
Typically deployed as the ‘number 6’ or in a double pivot, he dictates the speed of the game. His vision for long-range switches remains one of his most underrated assets.
Nico Raskin: Rangers leader, Russell Martin fallout, and rebirth under Danny Rohl
In a period where Rangers have largely underwhelmed, Nico Raskin has been a consistently top performer. While on occasion he has frustrated the Gers fanbase, the midfield gem is an absolute top talent in the heart of the Rangers engine room. Signed for £1.5million from Standard Liege back in January 2023, Raskin has gone on to become a mainstay in midfield. His long-term future at Ibrox remains somewhat shrouded in doubt. Raskin had a major fallout with former boss Russell Martin early in the 2025-26 campaign, having been linked with a big-money move to the Premier League. But he is a player who current boss Danny Rohl is a great admirer of, and it would be a tough pill to swallow if Raskin were to depart in the summer transfer window. The old saying is no player is bigger than the club, and that is certainly true. But keeping a player of Raskin’s quality would be hugely beneficial in the long-term vision of 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh of re-establishing Rangers as the dominant force in the Scottish Premiership.
What Danny Rohl previously said about Nico Raskin?
Rangers boss Rohl is clearly a big fan of Raskin’s, but – like many Gers supporters – has previously hinted about what more he wants to see from the midfield ace. Speaking back in December 2025, Rohl revealed the discussions he help with Raskin over what he can do to improve as a player.
“It’s important that players can always see a development, see a direction where we want them go,” Rohl said.
“This is what we are trying to deliver at the moment. I give him a picture of what I want to see from him.
“I had an individual talk with him in the past few days – very long, 25 or 30 minutes. I’m absolutely convinced that he recognises what we are doing.
“For me, his best position is as a No6, because he likes to have the game in front of him. I see that he can take the ball forward from there, rather than backwards from a No8 or No10 position. It’s very clear for me that the No6 role is best for him.
“Nico is an important player, both for me and the group. We have worked individually with him, and in meetings I spoke with him about what I want to see.
