The 'doomsday' scenario Derek McInnes faces already at Rangers over next week
Derek McInnes' Rangers tenure already risks completely derailing over the next week.
The Scotsman has won back-to-back matches, but that does not tell the whole story.
Rangers have so far taken one point from a possible six in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers have also been eliminated from the Europa League at the qualifying stage.
That leaves the UEFA Conference League as Rangers' only route to European football this campaign.
McInnes' side edged out Jablonec 1-0 in the first leg of their playoff qualifier, but their European prospects remain in the balance.
What is the 'doomsday' scenario facing Rangers?
Rangers were far from convincing against Jablonec and have work to do in the reverse fixture next week.
Failure to qualify for UEFA's third-rate competition does not bear thinking about.
Even more so with Celtic cruising towards the Champions League league phase as they lead LASK 3-0 from the first leg of their qualifier.
That is something flagged by respected journalist Hugh Keevins in Sunday's print edition of the Sunday Mail.
"There is a Doomsday scenario for Rangers boss Derek McInnes," he wrote.
"If Celtic qualify for the Champions League proper on Tuesday and Rangers fail to make it into the Conference League on Thursday, the manager’s approval rating goes subterranean.
"And if Celtic believe three goals of a start over Austrians LASK is no guarantee of European progress, to what extent does Rangers’ one-goal lead over Jablonec, from the Czech Republic, stand up to scrutiny?"
Keevins very much has a point, with McInnes knowing better than anyone he will be under immense pressure if Rangers fail to get the job done.
When was last time Rangers were not in Europe?
Rangers fans are accustomed to famous European nights at Ibrox, most notable in the run to the Europa League in 2022.
Not since 2017, when Rangers were rebuilding, have the Light Blues failed to qualify for any of the European competitions.
While it is hardly the competition supporters - and indeed McInnes - wanted to be in, it presents a realistic shot at winning some silverware.
Before fans can even start to think about that, however, the Gers first need to ensure they qualify by getting the job done in the Czech Republic next week.
