Steven Gerrard's Rangers return dashed by lesser-known Ibrox figure
Steven Gerrard was linked with a return as Rangers manager, but he now seems certain to miss out to Derek McInnes.
Danny Rohl is seemingly moving closer to quitting Rangers in favour of a move to Austrian side RB Salzburg.
The German cuts a divisive figure in Govan, as he's evidently a coach with talent and potential, but the manner in which his team ended the 2025-26 was concerning to say the least.
Should Rohl take the Salzburg job, this wouldn't be his first involvement with a Red Bull club, having began his coaching career with RB Leipzig in Germany.
Rohl's potential exit would cause significant disruption to Rangers' summer transfer plans, with targets having been identified to align with his vision for the team.
It would be a ship that would need steadying quickly, and there may not be a better candidate out there to complete that task than Gerrard.
Greg Stewart shares what he's heard on Rangers appointment
Having been the last Rangers manager to guide the club to a Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21, Gerrard remains a hugely popular figure among the Ibrox faithful.
Indeed, his three-and-a-half years as Gers boss between 2018 to 2021 were some of the most successful in recent Rangers history.
Gerrard's side played some excellent football, and the Liverpool legend also struck up a very close relationship with fans as well, which is something Rohl hasn't quite been able to achieve.
But, speaking in an interview via the Daily Record, former Gers player Greg Stewart believes that Rangers' new chief executive Jim Gillespie may favour appointing McInnes over Gerrard.
"The two names that scream out to me are Derek [McInnes] and Steven Gerrard," Stewart - who played under both of those coaches - said.
“If we could got one of those guys, then 100 per cent you let Danny go. You say thanks very much and go straight out and offer the job to whichever of those two you think you can get a deal done for first.
"I know the new chief exec Jim Gillespie likes Derek McInnes. I’m not going to say where I heard that but I know Jim likes Derek."
We know Cavenagh likes Gerrard, having tried to reappoint him before, but Gillespie may well have prevented that hire from happening as he has pushed for McInnes.
Why Stewart thinks Derek McInnes is made for Rangers
If there was ever a reminder about the size and allure of Rangers, it's been exemplified already this summer.
Despite Hearts finishing eight points above them last season, Gers have already poached their talismanic striker Lawrence Shankland, and could be set to steal their manager too.
It's this as to why Stewart believes hiring McInnes would be the continuation of Rangers' history of weakening their rivals through savvy business moves.
"With Derek, well it’s what Rangers have done for years – weaken your main opponents by taking their best players and coaches," Stewart continued.
“Hearts did so well last year and almost snatched the title. They will have ambitions of going again this term.
“But Rangers have already taken their captain Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer, and if they can take their manager too it would feel like they’ve dealt Hearts a huge blow before a ball is kicked."
Let's just hope Stewart is right and McInnes is finally the man to bring regular silverware back to Ibrox.
