Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is a serious target for Austrian side RB Salzburg, who hope to appoint the German with immediate effect.

Rohl has been a divisive figure at Ibrox so far in his tenure, and there were sack claims after the Gers slipped up in the race for the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Though the 37-year-old helped the Bears recover from the woes of Russell Martin, four straight losses, including defeats to Hearts and Celtic in the post-split fixtures, enraged the Light Blue army.

Despite this, Andrew Cavenagh has publicly backed his head coach, who he feels has the potential to lead Rangers back to glory.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has an impressive background as an assistant coach, and interestingly enough, was employed by the Red Bull group in the past at RB Leipzig in Germany.

The Gers are in direct contact with RB Salzburg regarding Rohl's future, and his past experiences under the group could tempt him to leave Ibrox.

What has Danny Rohl said before about working under RB group?

Rohl started at RB Leipzig in 2010 in a youth analysis role, where he eventually progressed to work as a video analyst with the first team from 2016 to 2018.

He was then promoted to become an assistant coach under Ralph Hassenhuttl and later Ralf Rangnick.

Rohl spent eight years with the RB group, and whether he sees that time as more important than the nine months he's had at Ibrox will soon be revealed.

He has expressed gratitude for his time with RB Leipzig, and has previously suggested that his philosophy is based on his roots with the German side.

The Gers boss said in 2023, as quoted by Inside Futbol: "I think as a role model it was important that I got experience from Ralf Rangnick about the philosophy, it’s about taking the parts from them and bringing them to your idea and then create your own philosophy."

He also said, as quoted by RB Live in 2025 : "I always want to work with the best players. I was allowed to look after great players as an assistant coach in [RB] Leipzig."

He may get the same allowances at a Champions League club like Salzburg, while working under the same Red Bull ownership.

Steven Gerrard to Rangers now real possibility as Danny Rohl exit on cards

Rohl already shown his exit stance in Wolfsburg answer

This isn't the first time that Rohl has been linked with a move away from Rangers, as Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg also tried to steal him from Ibrox.

However, the former RB Leipzig coach was quick to shut these rumours down at the end of last season, admitting his full focus is on Rangers.

We will have to wait and see if anything has changed, as it feels like it would take only a deep-routed connection to a club or a massive opportunity to sway his mind.

While he doesn't have a direct connection to Salzburg, the links to the Red Bull ownership could fuel thoughts of a managerial switch.
