Rangers may have already put plans in place for Danny Rohl's potential departure, with Steven Gerrard a favourite to succeed him.

Rohl could be leaving Ibrox on his own terms after only signing on with the club back in October.

This comes following news that RB Salzburg are pushing to appoint the German as their head coach with immediate effect.

Talks are ongoing between the Austrian outfit and the Bears over a solution regarding Rohl's future.

Naturally, Gers fans turn their attention to Gerrard, who is a free agent and has been for over a year since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

However, Gerrard has been linked with the vacant Burnley head coach role in recent weeks, which the 49ers may already be aware of.

Steven Gerrard to Burnley goes cold - why?

Burnley have been relegated from the English Premier League back down to the Championship, making the decision to part ways with Scott Parker

Gerrard emerged as the favourite to take over at Turf Moor and lead the Clarets back to the promised land at the first time of asking.

However, the noise of the former Ibrox boss going to Burnley has conveniently gone very cold in recent days.

It comes just as Rangers have been revealed to be in talks over Rohl leaving, with RB Salzburg seeing him as their main target.

It seems pretty obvious that the 49ers have known about the potential of Rohl leaving this week, as they've long planned for Gerrard to replace him, well before the media potentially had any chance to hear about it.

The former Liverpool star has yet to be officially linked with a return to Rangers, but if Gers do allow Rohl to leave, do not be surprised if they wrap things up for their former head coach in quick time.

Why did Gerrard turn Rangers down before?

Gerrard was Rangers' choice before they turned their attention to Rohl, but the former opted against a return to Ibrox.

He didn't feel like the timing was right, and instead was happy to sit back and watch the future of Gers unfold before any other possible opportunities.

This summer could be the most ambitious window the Bears have had in years, and the signing of Lawrence Shankland has already gotten things off to a flying start.

Gerrard may be tempted this time around, as the 49ers could have already made contact in anticipation of Rohl leaving.
