Derek McInnes: Rangers may have made the smartest decision in years for one key reason
Derek McInnes looks set to become the next Rangers manager in what is a masterstroke of a decision.
After missing out on the Scottish Premiership title last term, many expected recruitment to be the biggest talking point of the summer.
How wrong were they when it emerged that Danny Rohl was set to make the move to Salzburg, just months after there was calls for him to be sacked at Ibrox.
Nevertheless, the Gers have acted fast, and arguably faster than ever, to find his replacement, with McInnes set to take over.
The Hearts boss is reportedly in line to sign a three-year deal at Ibrox.
And for one main reason, it may be the smartest thing that Rangers have done since appointing Steven Gerrard.
Why Derek McInnes is the perfect appointment for Rangers
Rohl did a decent job, but in the end, it was not enough.
And one of the main reasons for that was because of the time it required for him to learn what was needed and what needed to be improved for Rangers to be a successful team.
McInnes, having encountered the Light Blues on several occasions last season and in previous campaigns, will not need that time.
He will already be well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of his soon-to-be new side, which will already have them on the front foot ahead of their return to action later this year.
On top of that, he will have the knowledge of the league, which may also play into their hands when it comes to their ambitions of being at the summit of Scottish football.
Rangers recruitment to be boosted by McInnes appointment
By knowing Rangers' weaknesses, McInness will also be well aware of where they need to strengthen this summer, before he has even entered the building.
Replacing Mikey Moore's impact is likely to be the priority, as the Light Blues reach for more creativity to feed Lawrence Shankland.
This could easily prove to be one of Rangers' best appointments in a long time, but only if they get that aspect of the summer right.
