Derek McInnes appointment has 'very significant' twist that should leave Rangers fans delighted
Derek McInnes was officially appointed as Rangers boss this Wednesday, shortly after the confirmation of Danny Rohl's exit.
It's been hectic at Ibrox recently, as plans for the summer transfer window have seen a drastic twist take place.
The Gers were already gearing up for the 2026-27 campaign under Rohl, signing Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland ahead of a "summer of change", as Andrew Cavenagh described.
The Rangers chairman wasn't wrong, though Rohl joining RB Salzburg was never even a possibility around two weeks ago.
After stealing Hearts' star player in Shankland, the Bears turned to McInnes instantly once they got the feeling that Rohl was headed for Austria.
However, the appointment of McInnes on a three-year deal will see the man in charge make some more important decisions than those before him.
Derek McInnes appointment as Rangers 'manager' is significant
The appointment of McInnes saw Rangers confirm that the former Hearts boss will take the title of the new manager at Ibrox.
Interestingly, recent times have seen the likes of Rohl, Russell Martin, Phillipe Clement and more be named as head coaches.
This saw other Ibrox figures like the now-dismissed duo of Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell have more authority in decision-making over said head coaches.
While speaking on Daily Record's Hotline Live, Keith Jackson shared the reason why McInnes being made manager is more important than it seems.
Jackson said: "I think it's significant that after Martin, head coach, Rohl, head coach, Rangers have appointed a 'manager'. I think the stressing of that word is really important, and I think Rangers fans should be delighted with that.
"It's an admission that Rangers have made mistakes under Andrew Cavenagh, but they've learned their lessons along the way. It's very significant."
It's said that the Scot is delighted to be back in Glasgow, and can't wait to get going ahead of a title-chasing season.
What this means for Rangers transfers
Though Rohl had conversations with the 49ers and Stig Inge Bjornebye in transfers, his word didn't overrule anyone else's.
All he could do was give his opinion.
Rangers' recruitment would, of course, have listened to the German head coach, but with McInnes now in charge, the latter has more weight to throw around behind the scenes.
He has the power to call the shots, and the team will almost certainly be entirely based around his short-term and long-term wants and needs.
Rangers won't be cautious in making signings if they feel it goes away from their overall vision, and that's because McInnes will have a much more important say in who the Bears sign
Either way, it will be a coordinated approach, and it will be interesting to see how many of Rangers' current listed targets will still be pursued now that McInnes is here.
