Tuur Rommens up against it at Rangers as 'spectacular' defender returns from injury
Tuur Rommens seems to be back fit at Rangers after his early-season injury.
The left-back started the opening three games of the season, but has been on the sidelines since.
With the Gers playing behind-closed-doors friendlies during the international break, the 23-year-old Belgian ace played his first minutes since the start of August.
While Rommens has been out injured, James Penrice has come in and taken Ibrox by storm.
The Scottish defender, who signed on loan from AEK Athens in the summer, has quickly become a fan favourite at the Glaswegian outfit after pitt
Derek McInnes now has a major decision to make over his starting lineup and it will be interesting to see who he starts at left-back in the coming matches.
Why Tuur Rommens has work cut out at Rangers
Penrice is ready to compete with Rommens for a place in the team after the international break.
The Gers played a couple of friendlies during the extended three-week break, with one against St Mirren.
Rommens got his first minutes in a long while, but has a tough task ahead of him to get regular action at Ibrox.
Given how well Penrice has fit into McInnes' plans at the Glaswegian outfit, Barry Ferguson believes the former Westerlo left-back will face a significant challenge in G51.
Speaking on Five Stars VIP on 6 October, Tom Miller said, "If he wants a piece of the action, and he was spectacular in his early career at Rangers, he's going to have to dip deep to get the jersey that Penrice holds just now, who has been so consistent. Incredible."
Ferguson added, "It's great, first and foremost, to see Rommens back fit. But I think he has got a job on his hands. I think Penrice has been outstanding.
"He has settled in so quickly. Showed so much quality. And he just looks like he's absolutely loving life. But now he'll know that he has got a quality player up against him in Rommens."
Why James Penrice is indispensable at Ibrox
Penrice hasn't just played like an ordinary left-back for Rangers in recent matches.
In the two games against Celtic, McInnes ensured the Gers maintained their dominance across the pitch by tucking Dujon Sterling alongside the centre-backs and pushing the AEK loanee into midfield.
Penrice played as an inverted full-back in the two Old Firm derbies and didn't look out of place.
The 27-year-old has consistently contributed on both ends of the pitch since coming into the team, instantly convincing fans of his signing.
There were a few doubts around the defender's qualities after he struggled for game time in Greece, but he's thriving under McInnes.
It feels like ages ago that Rommens was considered one of the Govan side's best additions last season, but fitness issues have derailed his prospects in G51.
