James Penrice 'phenomenal' at Rangers after doing something he's never done for Derek McInnes
James Penrice has been a brilliant addition to the Rangers squad.
Derek McInnes was disappointed to see the Scottish left-back leave Hearts, but now has him at his disposal in G51.
The 27-year-old was seen as a backup to Tuur Rommens, but has firmly cemented his place in the starting lineup.
Penrice has impressed many since moving to Ibrox from AEK Athens.
The Gers signed the left-back on loan in the summer transfer window and have an option to seal a bargain permanent deal at the end of the season.
Playing for the Glaswegian outfit comes with a lot of pressure, but the Scottish defender has shown no sign of being bogged down by it.
Why James Penrice has stood out at Rangers
Penrice could cost Rangers just £800,000, and given his recent performances, it would be a no-brainer.
Against Celtic, the defender was key to McInnes' game plan at Ibrox and Parkhead, featuring as an inverted full-back, uncharted territory for him.
The defender often occupied midfield spaces in the two Old Firm derbies and it was surprising to see him play so well in a role he probably hasn't experienced before.
Cammy Bell is in awe of the former Hearts ace and has been most impressed by him this season.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast on 1 October, the former Gers goalkeeper said, "Penrice has come in and been absolutely fantastic.
"He got asked to play that centre midfield role against Celtic, which is unknown to him. He produced a brilliant display on that day.
"It's always a big question mark over players when they join the Old Firm, can they handle the pressure? And Penrice has been phenomenal since he came in."
James Penrice success could be bad news for one player at Ibrox
Penrice has firmly secured his place in the starting lineup at Rangers and it would be surprising to see McInnes drop him anytime soon.
The defender on loan from AEK has reignited his career in G51 after a tough spell in Greece.
Rommens was considered an undisputed starter just a few months ago, but his situation has changed drastically.
The 23-year-old Belgian left-back's persistent fitness issues have allowed Penrice to take his place.
The ex-Westerlo defender will return from injury soon, but he faces a tough challenge to earn regular minutes at Ibrox.
