Tom English shares what was 'catastrophic' about Rangers vs Jagiellonia in Europa League

Rangers were all over the place against Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday, losing 2-1.

Poland's Chorten Arena hosted the Gers in the first leg of the Europa League's third qualifying round on 6 August.

The Light Blues took the lead early through an own goal, but the Polish side quickly turned things around in the first half and will take that lead to Ibrox next week.

Kajetan Szmyt scored two goals in eight minutes as Derek McInnes' team were too easy to play through.

The Scottish manager hasn't had the best start to his stint at the Glaswegian outfit and the game against Jagiellonia was another example.

What was particularly disappointing to see from the Govan side was their defending in the first half.

One Rangers moment that was appalling vs Jagiellonia

McInnes was left raging with Thelo Aasgaard after failing with an audacious pass right before Jagiellonia's second goal.

However, it was the Polish side's first goal that left BBC Sport journalist Tom English particularly baffled.

Szmyt cut inside on the right-wing and played a ball in that seemingly looked like a cross, but it ended up beating Ivor Pandur.

Despite the Light Blues having multiple bodies in the box, with McInnes starting Ross McCrorie, Emmanuel Fernandez, Dujon Sterling and Tuur Rommens, none of them managed to block the attempt.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 6 August, English said, "The goals they conceded are catastrophic really. The first one, the ball comes in and there's four Rangers defenders against two Jagiellonia attackers, it's in their favour and they lose it.

"It's an appalling goal to give away."

McInnes made some strong calls immediately after being appointed at Rangers, one of them being discarding John Souttar from his plans.

It was clearly evident from the start of the summer that the Gers would need reinforcements at centre-back.

Ben Godfrey and Olwethu Makhanya have signed for the Light Blues, but the Atalanta loanee has picked up an injury, while the South Africa international has only just been made available.

McInnes could have brought Souttar back into the fold, seeing the lack of options at the back, but instead decided to start Fernandez and Sterling at the back, which clearly backfired.

The ex-Hearts boss has to take responsibility for the underwhelming display in Poland and fans in G51 will surely be asking qustions of him.
