Ross McCausland has somehow made headlines again at Rangers.

The winger has only been named on the bench once in the Scottish Premiership this season, without being used.

McCausland did score in the Premier Sports Cup victory over St Mirren earlier in the campaign, but they're his only competitive minutes so far.

Derek McInnes has several wingers to choose from, with Djeidi Gassama, Findlay Curtis and Badredine Bouanani all ahead.

That's where a behind-closed-doors friendly against Dundee came into play at Auchenhowie this week.

Keith Jackson revealed all on the 2-1 defeat, with McCausland making somewhat of a difference in the game.

What happened in Rangers friendly with Dundee?

With no European football this season, McInnes used this week to play Dundee again, days after their 2-2 draw at Dens Park.

While it ended in defeat for the Bears, it was those fighting for minutes, like McCausland, who were given minutes.

Speaking on Daily Record's Hotline Live, Jackson gave even more insight into the behind-closed-doors friendly.

"If Derek McInnes was looking at that XI today to see if there was anybody ready to put in a real challenge to make his selection difficult ahead of the game against St Johnstone," he said.

"Maybe not.

"I think it was Ross McCausland who got Rangers goal, and he's so far out of the picture, it's frightening."

What next for Rangers and Ross McCausland?

The winger hasn't even been given a chance in a squad for over a month now, so he needed something to happen.

Playing in this game and scoring may have caught McInnes' eye, but it's hard to see him getting minutes, still.

Gassama, Curtis, Bouanani and even Minsu Kim are miles ahead in those wide areas, so it's not even a contest.

With St Johnstone next up in the Scottish Premiership before that Hampden semi-final against Aberdeen, now isn't the time to be experimenting and changing.

McInnes did more than enough of that earlier in the season, and we all know that didn't end very well.

McCausland's contract is up at the end of this season, and it still looks likely to end in separation for both parties.
