Rangers fans were unable to see Lawrence Shankland at his brilliant best after Steve Clarke chose to start him against Brazil.

The Bears managed to pull off one of the signings of the summer before the Scottish transfer market even opened, stealing Hearts' skipper for free.

Shankland finally agreed terms to sign for the Gers and then jetted off for North America, where he has been situated in the last couple of weeks.

The 30-year-old was unable to help Scotland get anything against Carlo Ancelotti's side, with his nation's chances of World Cup progression now in doubt.

However, Clarke's decision to start the Rangers man has come into question, after not handing him any minutes in the 1-0 loss to Morocco.

Shankland was picked by the Scotland boss ahead of Che Adams, a decision which not everyone agrees with.

Lawrence Shankland twist not expected

Shankland came into the World Cup on top form, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Curacao before getting a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win against Bolivia.

However, the striker was benched in the loss to Morocco, with Clarke opting to play Adams, bringing on Lyndon Dykes and Ross Stewart late into the second half.

Following the Tartan Army's second loss in the group stage, they now sit on three points and await their fate of qualification with games to be played elsewhere.

While in discussion with Paul Slane and Simon Ferry on Open Goal, Andy Halliday talked about Clarke's decision to start Shankland against Brazil, despite him not being seen as good enough to play in the game prior.

Halliday said: "I did say I would've played Adams, but I'm not fuming he chose one or the other, there's not a massive drop off between the two."

Slane replied: "Why hasn't he come on against Morocco and then started against Brazil? It's strange, isn't it?"

Ferry added: "I wouldn't have started him last night."

Scotland's only way of qualifying for the Round of 32 is through finishing as one of the eight best-placed teams that finish third in the respective groups.

Clarke's side are seventh in the standings, with multiple games yet to be played.

Scotland missing a Shankland trick; Derek McInnes knows all about

Shankland has been given the added bonus of a reunion with his former Hearts boss straight away after joining Rangers.

He travelled off to the World Cup thinking he'd be coming back to work under Danny Rohl at Auchenhowie, but little did he know what was to come.

Regardless of whether Scotland get sent home early, it won't be Shankland's fault, and if anything, Clarke has got it all wrong.

Derek McInnes has shown that the forward is best suited in a two-striker formation, as the latter netted 16 times for the Jambos last season in the league.

It is expected that Shankland will have a strike partner at Ibrox next season, and it's something Clarke should consider if Scotland somehow make it through.
