Rangers' pre-season plans change already as Derek McInnes and Andrew Cavenagh in talks
Rangers have made some adjustments ahead of the 2026-27 season, following the appointment of Derek McInnes.
The former midfielder finally arrives as boss, having been linked with the job multiple times in the last decade.
The circumstances would not have been anticipated, with Danny Rohl abruptly moving on to RB Salzburg.
But the Gers have acted quick to get a deal over the line, with McInnes signing a three-year deal at Ibrox.
The 54-year-old joins from Hearts, after his Jambos side came within touching distance of the title last term.
Looking to go one step further with Rangers, he is set to get to work, with some slight adjustments made.
Derek McInnes to adapt initial Rangers plans
The Govan side would miss out on the title last term, after a four-match losing run heading into the final day.
Even so, the trust was placed in Rohl to guide the club to success, with the summer plans constructed around the German.
Initially opting for a return to training this coming Monday, this has been shifted by McInnes, who is expected in Glasgow over the weekend.
The Daily Record report that pre-season training will start later in the week, with the squad meeting McInnes on Thursday, 25 July.
Alongside this, the report outlines that discussions have taken place between the new Gers boss and chairman Andrew Cavenagh, with plans adapted to McInnes, following the initial developments around Rohl.
Can McInnes achieve instant Ibrox success?
Since returning to Scotland in 2013, McInnes has made a huge impact, with the scenes before and after his Aberdeen arrival telling a story.
Much has been made about the recruitment at Hearts, but he proved adaptable at Tynecastle, as his Jambos side spent the vast majority of the 2025-26 season at the top of the table.
Rohl is a real work in progress as a manager, with there being no doubt that he has sky high potential.
But Rangers is a club that demands success in the here and now - something that will be required of McInnes.
Adaptable in his tactics and a real galvaniser, he is someone who knows the league inside and out, and will understand the pressure at Ibrox.
The Rohl exit came out of nowhere, but the Gers could well be the beneficiaries of the whole scenario.
