Rangers’ first signing of the summer, Lawrence Shankland, could be the mentality monster that Danny Rohl needs next season.

The Bears finally announced they captured the signing of the long-admired Hearts skipper recently, and it’s sparked new optimism around Ibrox.

Shankland almost led the Jambos to win the Scottish Premiership last season but ultimately came up short on the final day to Celtic in a controversial loss.

Regardless, the Scottish international proved why Gers have been after him for so long throughout the campaign, but now they have him, pressure is on the player to perform.

Shankland could even be given the captain’s armband at Rangers, at least that’s what “mindset coach” John Johnstone thinks.

The 49ers showed a great sign of ambition by signing Shankland, especially considering Hearts are going nowhere and want to challenge for the title once more next season.

The striker had a top season for Derek McInnes’ side, and will not only bring goals to Ibrox, but the mentality needed to win trophies.

Shankland will link up with his teammates at Auchenhowie for pre-season shortly after Scotland finish up at the World Cup, as a big decision awaits for Rohl.

Mindset coach Johnstone has suggested that, in light of conversations about who the next Rangers captain might be, Rohl would not be let down if he picks Shankland to don the armband.

Johnstone said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “I’ve no idea who will get the privilege of becoming the new Rangers captain.

“But from what I know of Lawrence and the body of work he had as Hearts captain, both in terms of his performance level and how he conducted himself and also the connection the fans seem to have with him.

It will certainly be a big call for Rohl to make, and one that he needs to get right to please Rangers fans.

Should Shankland get the captain’s armband?

Not only will Gers have to replace James Tavernier at right-back, but they need to replace the club’s captain.

Rangers could be getting Hampus Skoland as their long-term Tavernier repalcement, but will also be thinking about who the next skipper will be.

One thing Rohl has asked for more of this summer is leaders, so it’s hard to see how any of the current players could take up the responsibility of being the captain.

However, Shankland, who is already a Gers fan and a passionate player, has experience of being the front of a football club in Scotland.

He’s shown that he can lead, and as Johnstone backs up in his promise, the Scot has taken on all the challenges and pressure thrown at him so far in his career.
