Russell Martin may be fighting for his future at Rangers against Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup.

Hearts got their first win at Ibrox in 11 years on 13 September, making things worse for the Scottish manager as the Gers find themselves 10th in the league table.

Andrew Cavenagh has held talks with Martin and backed him ahead of the quarter-final clash against Hibs at home on 20 September.

With fan unrest arguably at its tipping point, the Glaswegian outfit may be in for an embarrassing prospect in G51 on the weekend.

Ibrox looks empty as ticket sales open for Rangers vs Hibernian

It appears that many home supporters have no intention of attending the stadium for Hibernian's visit.

Gers fan RFC Michael shared a screenshot on X on 15 September of the available seats at Ibrox for the Premier Sports Cup tie, with sales open for season ticket holders.

While the general sale hasn't started yet, it's arguably damning to see so many available seats, suggesting season ticket holders may be boycotting the game.

  • The Glaswegian outfit have suffered their worst start in the league in 47 years.
  • Martin has the lowest points-per-game ratio of any Gers manager, with 1.17.
  • The Scottish manager has a win rate of just 25 per cent at the Light Blues.

The lack of support in G51 against David Gray's team may be what's needed for the Glaswegian outfit's hierarchy to realise that they need to make a change in the dugout.

Martin's tenure at Ibrox has frustrated supporters, and his sacking felt inevitable after losing 9-1 on aggregate to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off.

It's clear that most fans have had enough of the former Southampton boss at the Light Blues, and the sensible thing would be to replace him.

Andrew Cavenagh need to answer fans at Ibrox

Cavenagh should put his reputation on the line for Martin with public backing if he feels the Scottish manager is still the right man for the job.

Rangers have looked poor defensively playing under the ex-Saints boss, whose ideas haven't translated in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers' joint-worst European loss came under the 39-year-old head coach against Brugge, and that should've been the final straw for the hierarchy.

With the prospect of success in the league now an uphill task, Martin should be sacked immediately to possibly turn things around in G51.
