Rangers: Ally McCoist delighted with Derek McInnes hire, he can seek advice from legendary boss
Ally McCoist is delighted to see his former Ibrox team-mate Derek McInnes take the reins at Rangers.
The Gers confirmed the appointment of their new manager earlier this week, after Andrew Cavenagh and Co. made a quick decision.
Once the Bears understood that Danny Rohl was open to exploring a move to join RB Salzburg, they didn't hesitate and quickly drew up a four-man shortlist.
McInnes sat at the top of that list, and unlike the process of hiring Russell Martins' successor, the Light Blues got their main target with no real issues.
Transfer plans are expected to remain very similar despite the managerial change, but the ex-Hearts boss will have more involvement in behind-the-scenes decisions than Rohl would have done.
Now, McCoist has expanded on why he thinks McInnes is the right man to finally take Rangers forward.
Ally McCoist says Derek McInnes can lean on Sir Alex Ferguson advice
McInnes orchestrated a fantastic season for Hearts last term, as the Jambos came excruciatingly close to breaking the Old Firm dominance of the Scottish Premiership.
The Scot finally wrote a message to Hearts fans once his Ibrox switch was confirmed, admitting that controversial officiating decisions may have been what cost them the league.
Though the majority of Rangers supporters are delighted with the appointment of the 54-year-old, some point to the fact that he is yet to win anything of note in recent times.
However, McCoist is under no illusion that the timing is right for Rangers to have appointed McInnes.
McCoist said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun: "I’ve spoken to him, and I couldn’t be happier or prouder. He’s a clever lad, Derek. He’s a manager in his own right, but he’s also worked with some of the very best.
"He’s also got the ear of Sir Alex Ferguson. It's a win-win for all parties involved. That’s no disrespect to Rohl. For me, it’s a no-brainer."
While it's true that McInnes has worked with some of the best in the game and had an impressive season last campaign, there will still be some at Ibrox who reserve judgment for a while yet.
Which players could get second chance under McInnes?
Rangers fans will have to wait and see what system McInnes deploys for the Bears, as he opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Hearts last season.
While it worked for the Jambos, Rangers went with a 4-2-3-1 system for most of the season under two different managers, and so the potential change will be refreshing.
This could see Bojan Miovski given a lifeline at Rangers due to McInnes' tendency to play two strikers up top.
The new Rangers manager could get the best out of Oliver Antman, too, who has massively underperformed since arriving this time last summer.
Finally, Connor Barron will most likely get a big chance to impress during pre-season, as an injury last campaign saw him lose his spot.
