Pat Bonner accuses John Beaton of cardinal sin in Rangers win vs Celtic

Rangers boosted their Scottish Premiership title hopes with victory over Celtic, but there is a suggestion John Beaton provided a helping hand.

Ryan Naderi, who was superb in Rangers' 3-0 victory over the same opponents last week, struck with 33 minutes played.

Derek McInnes' men were good value for their half-time lead and did superbly to see out a famous Old Firm win on enemy territory.

The win is Rangers' fifth in a row in the league and moves them within two points of the league leaders.

However, it may well have been the Gers were down to 10 men prior to Naderi's goal on a different day.

At least that is the verdict of Pat Bonner.

Should Emmanuel Fernandez have been sent off vs Celtic?

Emmanuel Fernandez looked a weak link for Rangers in the first half, with Celtic's attackers winning all their battles with the centre-back.

The 25-year-old was cautioned early on for a challenge on Celtic's Camilo Duran.

But that did not stop him from getting stuck into further challenges.

One of those was on Benjamin Nygren close to the right-hand touchline with 15 minutes on the clock.

Celtic fans and players wanted to see a second yellow, but Beaton decided against going into his pocket.

That caused fury from former Celtic player Bonner on BBC Radio Scotland, as he effectively accused the official of the cardinal sin of not doing his job.

"I think the referee's bottled it there, I'll be honest with you," Bonner said.

"He's gone right through him there. If he'd not got a booking previously, he's getting a yellow there."

Bonner may have had a point on any other day, but everyone knows officials tend to let minor fouls pass by in high-magnitude derby clashes.

Rangers have now won six games in a row across all competitions, conceding just once.

Do not underestimate just how big this latest victory is.

From the title race being dead after just a few weeks to being right back on. What a difference in mood.

This win was fully deserved, too, as Rangers were better all over the field.

The Gers outshot Celtic 15 to five, with eight and one shot on target respectively.

Celtic were chasing a goal for the entire second half yet never really laid a glove on Rangers, who perhaps could have won by more.

McInnes deserves massive praise, with Rangers now able to bask in an Old firm double over these next three weeks.
