Mark Clattenburg disagrees after footage of Rangers controversy vs Motherwell

Mark Clattenburg feels Rangers were lucky to be awarded a penalty against Motherwell.

The former Premier League referee disagreed with Duncan Nicolson's decision to penalise Tom Sparrow after a coming together with Djeidi Gassama.

At around the hour mark, the on-field referee pointed to the spot, but Minsu Kim's penalty was off target.

The Ibrox side subsequently managed to see off the game after Ryan Naderi's opener in the 12th minute against Motherwell.

In the end, the penalty didn't really have a say on the result as Derek McInnes' team created several other opportunities.

The Glaswegian outfit arguably deserved to win the game, but the controversy around the penalty has still managed to become a big talking point.

While Clattenburg may disagree with the decision, Keith Hackett feels Nicolson made the right call.

The former Premier League official feels the criteria for giving penalties is at an all-time low right now.

If Clattenburg were in Nicolson's position, he wouldn't have penalised Sparrow for his clash with Gassama.

The ex-referee has described the decision as "very soft" after analysing the incident.

Speaking on So Near, Yet So VAR on 6 September, Clattenburg said, "I just think that if we're going to award penalty kicks for this, that means the threshold on foul challenges inside the penalty area is at an all-time low.

"It means nearly every bit of contact inside the penalty area is going to be a penalty kick. I just think, for me, if I was refereeing this game, I wouldn't be wanting to be putting myself in this position of giving soft penalties.

"For me, I would put it in the category; I wouldn't even say soft, I would say very soft."

Kim didn't have the best of afternoons for Rangers against Motherwell, but he was still lively.

The South Korean star was the Gers' creative outlet up front, playing several key passes in the game.

While the 20-year-old attacker missed his penalty, he was a constant threat for Motherwell during his 69 minutes on the pitch.

McInnes seems to have found the right formula to bring out the best in his squad.

Even with Lawrence Shankland possibly missing for several weeks, the Scottish manager can be confident about Naderi and Kevin Kelsy coming in and doing a decent job in the upcoming matches.

Kim has been a game-changer for the Glaswegian outfit in the last three matches and he will surely be a key player in their success this season.
