Keith Hackett reacts to Rangers controversy as Motherwell make 'justice' shout

Rangers were awarded a controversial penalty in their win over Motherwell on Saturday.

The Bears started strongly at Ibrox, as early substitute Ryan Naderi tapped into an empty net after a mistake from goalkeeper Alex Paulsen.

The Gers then could have made it 2-0 before the break, as Djeidi Gassama was taken out by Motherwell's Tom Sparrow.

It was Dan Neil's crossed which was floated into the visitors' box, as Gassama nipped in to be taken out by the right-back.

Minsu Kim stepped up to take the spot kick after Lawrence Shankland was taken off with a suspected hamstring injury early on, but failed to convert from the spot.

Either way, Motherwell have a strong feeling about the decision from referee Duncan Nicolson, as Keith Hackett offers his verdict.

Derek McInnes will be happy with his side's win, but there was nervous moments in the second 45.

That could have been avoided had Kim buried his effort from 12 yards, but his first goal in Govan will have to wait on.

There has been plenty of noise online about the decision for Rangers' penalty, as VAR was seemingly not working properly at Ibrox.

While speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett offered his verdict on the penalty incident.

He said: "There can be no complaint here. The referee has made the correct decision to award a penalty kick."

Hopefully this calms down the ire of rival opponents, though the stigma will most likely remain.

What did Motherwell say about Rangers' penalty?

Rangers have made it three wins from three in all competitions, and though McInnes is slowly building trust at Ibrox, it will take more time after the club's woeful exit from European football.

Had Kim tucked his penalty away, there's every chance the Bears would have started playing much more free-flowing football.

They had the chances to punish the Steelmen, who were clearly unhappy about the penalty call at Ibrox.

While updating their supporters on X, Motherwell's official post read: "Rangers have an incredibly soft-looking penalty. Justice done, as it's blasted wide of the post."

The call had no baring on the full-time result, which was a fully deserved three points anyway.

The performance from Rangers merited further trust for McInnes, and it feels like several moments could have triggered a white wash at Ibrox.
