Hearts defender John Souttar has made a major decision to join Rangers and snub a move to England, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 25-year-old is understood to favour a move to Blackburn or Sheffield United and he can begin pre-contract talks with them this month.

However, he is unlikely to do that and stay put in Scotland to join Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox.

Big news

The Scottish defender was keen on joining the two English clubs before Gers showed an interest.

However, they moved heaven and earth to woo their man and appear to have succeeded with Souttar now expected to move to Ibrox in the summer.

While they would have liked him to join now, given Connor Goldson's uncertain future, he would have arrived at a transfer fee.

In the summer, they will be securing his services for a free which would be viewed as a massive coup by the Rangers hierarchy.

They still could look to sign him in January but that would depend on any possible outgoings.

The important thing was to get him to make his decision and luckily for the Gers, he's chosen them.

Playing for the biggest club in the land would certainly help him with his Scotland national team credentials and he could grow into becoming the Gers captain in the future.

Souttar is rated extremely highly by Kyle Lafferty who has labelled him as "incredible". [Scottish Sun]
