Ferguson impressed as Rangers 'in talks to bring player back' to Ibrox

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson says it "makes so much sense" for Rangers to re-sign former player Nikola Katic.

The Daily Record reported on 7 January that the defender's representatives are in talks with clubs over an exit from FC Zurich before the winter transfer window closes.

Katic would supposedly favour a return to Ibrox, where he spent four years at the start of his career, and a move away from his current club now seems likely after his manager's latest comments.

Given the fact he is already accustomed to life as a Rangers player, Ferguson believes it is a deal the Gers need to make happen.

"He's a player who's already been there," he exclusively told Ibrox News. "He was a bit raw previously, but we're talking a few years down the line and he's going to be a better all-round player.

"There's not going to be any surprises because he already knows the pressure of coming into Rangers. He knows you're only ever one game from the fans going absolutely off their nut.

"For me, it makes so much sense to get him in there. It's a no-brainer for me."

Rangers can solve defensive issues with Nikola Katic signing

Philippe Clement has had to chop and change in defence due to injuries, and there is no doubt that Rangers could do with another defender coming in.

Katic, as Ferguson points out, will need little time to adapt in Glasgow given he is already well accustomed to the city - and indeed the goldfish bowl that comes with being a Gers player.

Now aged 28, and with three seasons as a regular in Switzerland under his belt, there is no doubt that Katic will be a better player than before.

Assuming it is a low-cost transfer, this is one the Light Blues need to get over the line over the next couple of weeks.
