Barry Ferguson shares exactly how Djeidi Gassama can be top player for Rangers
Barry Ferguson wants to see drastic improvement from Djeidi Gassama at Rangers.
The former Sheffield Wednesday star has been Derek McInnes' preferred option on the left-wing this season.
In the 3-1 win against Kilmarnock, the Mauritania international put the Killie defence under constant pressure with his darting runs and dribbles.
Gassama got an assist at Ibrox after his attempted shot came off Ryan Naderi in the 3-1 win.
The 23-year-old winger got into decent positions against the East Ayrshire club, but couldn't make the most of it.
Ferguson has immense faith in the attacker, but admits that he isn't the finished article just yet.
How Djeidi Gassama can become Rangers asset
Gassama gets himself in decent positions for Rangers, but what he does in the final bit of play matters most.
The winger has scored just one goal this season, which came in the Premier Sports Cup win against St Mirren.
While the attacker does have three assists in eight Scottish Premiership games, he arguably should have more.
Ex-Celtic ace Charlie Mulgrew has been left frustrated with what he's seen from Gassama in front of goal.
Ferguson believes the Mauritania ace has a lot of potential and just needs to improve his decision-making up front.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 12 October, Mulgrew said, "The amount of times I've seen him in great areas and be off balance when he shoots and blowing it over the bar or not picking up someone in the box. So that's the next part for his game."
Ferguson added, "That's the one thing he has to work on, there's no doubt. I think he has got so many attributes you would want in a wide player, it's just that final shot on goal or final decision-making when you get into the final third.
"He has to polish up on that. And if he does that, then I think Rangers have got a right good player on their hands."
Why Djeidi Gassama doesn't have time to waste at Ibrox
Gassama has been a regular starter for Rangers this season, but it remains to be seen how long that will last.
McInnes shared a few concerns about the winger's end product after the Kilmarnock game and wants to see more finesse.
It's encouraging to see the attacker put the opposition defence on their back foot, but he needs to make most of the opportunities he creates.
Findlay Curtis is waiting in the wings for his opportunity to start under McInnes and will be ready to take it.
The Scottish youngster showed how deadly he can be during the international break and McInnes could look to give him a chance soon.
