Badredine Bouanani opened up his Rangers account with a brilliant finish against Dundee on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was brought to Govan just ahead of the deadline, as Derek McInnes searched for one final piece to his puzzle in attack.

The Algerian joined on an initial season-long loan from Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart, but the Gers have an option to buy worth around £15.5million.

Bouanani put the Bears level in their 2-2 draw against Dundee at Dens Park, and arguably should have been hailed as the catalyst for a victory.

However, McInnes' side chucked away the lead after Nicolas Raskin's wonderstrike was cancelled out by more sloppy defensive play.

Despite Bouanani's goal, there are still some claims that the Rangers forward needs to make some progress in order to show the best version of himself.

Jim Duffy suggests 'risk' Badredine Bouanani needs to take to improve

Bouanani has only started two games in the Scottish Premiership so far since joining Rangers, with several other stars giving him competition.

McInnes has taken an early liking to Minsu Kim, despite the South Korean failing to register either a goal or an assist yet.

However, the 20-year-old was moved centrally against Steven Pressley's side, allowing Bouanani to start the game.

While speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Jim Duffy explained how he's been impressed by Bouanani so far, but also suggested what the young forward needs to do to improve.

He said: "Bouanani initially, his contribution wasn't good enough, but then he started to grow and obviously scored a fantastic goal. He is a terrific player; I think he's got real quality, real potential, that boy.

"I think he's got to play higher up the pitch; he's almost got to risk letting the full-back go and say, 'No, I'm staying here'.

"That's where he's more effective, and a lot of the games he will be able to do that, but last night, he didn't get the chance to do it."

Bouanani can also offer creativity from out on the right, but perhaps McInnes needs to keep playing the loan winger to reap the rewards of his true skill.

Who at Rangers could be victim to Bouanani's success?

A big talking point from the game was how McInnes decided to drop Kevin Kelsy to the bench, which in turn seemed to have a negative effect on Ryan Naderi's performance.

The £9.5m-rated centre-forward came off the bench with a little over 10 minutes to go in the match, and is surely primed to start against St. Johnstone next time out.

We all know how much McInnes loves Naderi, and it would be a crime to drop Bouanani after his performance at Dens Park.

That leaves Kim as the victim, with some of the belief that he could be more impactful off the bench.

A return to Naderi and Kelsy up top, with two natural wingers on either side supplying the crosses ahead of a midfield pairing may be the way to go.

But Kim would surely have to be the unfortunate man here.
