Derek McInnes may be pleased not to play European football at Rangers this season.

The Gers were knocked out of the Europa League and Conference League after defeats to Jagiellonia Bialystok and Jablonec.

After a poor start to the season domestically and in Europe, the Scottish manager has found some stability at the Light Blues.

Rangers face St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday and will want to win all three points after their 2-2 draw against Dundee.

The Govan have seen their prospects in the Scottish Premiership improve, but they're still behind Celtic in the league table.

McInnes might not want to admit it, but the lack of midweek European games could have a monumental effect on the league title race.

Rangers European record surprises before kick-off vs St Johnstone

In the 2024-25 campaign, the Europa League was something fans could look forward to amid the Gers' poor domestic form.

However, last season, European fixtures proved a hindrance for the Light Blues, as they were knocked out in the Europa League first phase.

Immediately after the midweek matches, the Glaswegian outfit struggled to pick up points in the Scottish Premiership.

Draws against Motherwell, St Mirren, Falkirk and Hibernian followed the Govan side's European matches.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 24 October, Tom English said, "Just looking at it, last season in Europe, and this is why it can be a blessing and a curse.

"Last season in the league game directly after European games: drew at Motherwell, Dundee, St Mirren, Celtic, Falkirk, Falkirk again and Hibs."

Andy Halliday immediately responded, "Wow, that's something."

Derek McInnes could finally benefit from Ibrox experiement

McInnes has mostly used Minsu Kim on the right-wing or the number 10 position since his signing from Girona.

Djeidi Gassama has enjoyed the Scottish manager’s faith this season, but the winger has frustrated fans with his poor decision-making in the final third.

The end product has been missing from the former Sheffield Wednesday ace since his move to Ibrox and McInnes has decided to drop him to the bench.

Badredine Bouanani has been a creative force on the right-wing whenever he has been given a proper opportunity.

The Algeria international has rightfully kept his place in the team, but that could mean a change in Kim's position.

Ryan Naderi and Kevin Kelsy's partnership has been a winning formula for McInnes.

It's time to see whether the South Korea international can have an impact coming off the left for the Govan side.

Kim is naturally right-footed and playing in place of Gassama may be the perfect fit for him in the Glaswegian outfit’s starting line-up.
