Ally McCoist has hit out at Celtic after Adrian Durham claimed Rangers are the main beneficiaries of penalty calls in the Scottish Premiership.

Fans on either side of Glasgow argue they are mistreated when it comes to refereeing decisions, and the former Gers striker looks to be one of them.

Last season, Chris Sutton and Ian Ladyman laughed off the "conspiracy theorists" who suggested both Old Firm clubs are continuously punished wrongly by officials, but McCoist has now taken a swing at Brenden Rodgers' side.

Adrian Durham took his opportunity to make fun of Rangers, having cited their penalty statistics after bringing up Celtic's escape from a spot-kick against Hearts before being awarded their own on Saturday 14 September.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Tuesday (17 September, 7:12am), Adrian Durham said: "Rangers are traditionally the ones who get the most penalties in the Scottish Premiership."

McCoist instantly replied: "Don't talk nonsense. Rangers haven't had a penalty at Celtic Park in seven years. I swear, it's ridiculous. And they've had about seven penalties at Ibrox."

Durham lightened the mood with a jibe back, saying: "You've got to get into the box to be awarded a penalty, so maybe Rangers should try doing that at Celtic Park."

Rangers treated unfairly in Old Firm derbies v Celtic?

There have been plenty of claims over the years from both sets of fans about the number of wrong decisions from referees, and there always will be due to the passionate fanbases wanting to protect their sides.

Teams in the Scottish Premiership, including the Gers, will always feel that Celtic are on the positive end of refereeing decisions, but it is impossible to prove.

However, Philippe Clement certainly cannot hide behind this penalty argument after their most recent meetings, with a clear "gulf" now opening up between the Old Firm rivals.

Goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor saw the Hoops claim their fifth victory in the last six meetings, piling the pressure on Clement at Ibrox.

The Gers will next have a chance to put things right against their bitter rivals in January, and Clement's side must still be in contention to pip Rodgers' side to the Scottish Premiership title by then.
